The forum, hosted by Churches Supporting Churches, will focus a much-needed spotlight on those still struggling to recover in New Orleans. By highlighting the vital issues of housing , education and community safety organizers hope voters will learn more about each of the gubernatorial candidates’ views on these rebuilding issues. Delgado Sponsors House of Representatives “Meet the Candidates” Forum

New Orleans, La. - The Delgado Community College Foundation, in cooperation with the Student Government Association (SGA), is sponsoring a Louisiana State “Meet the Candidates” forum on the City Park Campus (615 City Park Avenue in New Orleans) at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 3. The event will be held in the college gymnasium on the first floor of Building 11.

NEW ORLEANS — The voter registration deadline for the October 20 election is this Wednesday, September 20. You may apply for voter registration by completing a Louisiana Voter Registration Application form at any Registrar of Voters office or by mailing a voter registration application.

If you have recently moved or changed your name, you must update your voter registration record by Wednesday in order to vote in the October 20 election. Please remind your friends and family members to make sure their voter registration record is up to date.

Having promised increased accessibility to the BESE, Givens will welcome the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at 2:00 PM to the Lindy Boggs Center at UNO, 2000 Lakeshore Drive for only its second meeting ever held in New Orleans.

“Homeowners and Renters: Treated with the same respect, Held to the same standards”

September 19, 6:00-8:00pm

NPN’s first traveling forum will focus on the relationship between homeowners and renters living and working together in the same neighborhood in hopes of reducing the rhetoric that pits renters and homeowners against one another. Further, a discussion about the responsibility of rental property owners to maintain the quality of life and participate in the planning processes for the neighborhoods where they own property. In addition, fair housing laws and practices, and the ways in which both homeowners and renters can collaborate to ensure fair housing, which in turn will improve quality of life for all community members will be discussed.

DIRECTIONS:

If you are coming from Leon C. Simon, turn onto Milneburg Road to get onto the campus. After a few blocks, you will pass the Recreation Center on your right, and the Business Building is on your left. Go past the Business Building, and there is a parking lot on your left, facing Kirschman Hall. You can walk through Kirshman Hall to get to the Business Building.

If you are coming from Elysian Fields, turn onto Alumni Drive to get onto the campus, then go right onto Milneburg Rd. You will pass the Recreation Center on your right, and the Business Building is on your left. Go past the Business Building, and there is a parking lot on your left, facing Kirschman Hall. You can walk through Kirshman Hall to get to the Business Building.

The Milneburg Neighborhood association represents the area that spans from Filmore Street to Mexico Street/ St. Roch Ave. to Elysian Fields Ave. The Milneburg Neighborhood Association Motto is Milneburg- Clean, Quiet, Safe.

Appeals Court Overturns Verdict On “Jena 6″ Student

Jena, LA (AHN) - An appeals court in Louisiana has vacated the conviction of an African-American student who was found guilty of beating a Caucasian student in what has become a case of national interest.

The 3rd District Court of Appeals in Lake Charles tossed out Mychal Bell’s conviction for second degree battery on the grounds that it should have been tried in a juvenile court. Bell was 16 when he participated in the beating of another student in December 2006.

Bell and five other African-American students from a high school in Jena, Louisiana, were initially charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit attempted murder after beating Justin Barker, a Caucasian student who claims he did nothing to provoke the attack. (more…)

ONE NEW ORLEANS OPERATIONAL DEPARTMENTS CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATES WEEK OF 9/14

NEW ORLEANS, LA (September 14, 2007) - This week, the City of New Orleans Public Works Department announced that it reached a milestone in repairing more than 50,000 potholes this year. Two of the very popular PK2000s, better known as “Pothole Killers,” have moved systematically throughout the city repairing potholes since January.

The department also announced the beginning of a roadway construction project on Broad Street that will be coordinated by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. Several projects scheduled by the LADOTD were delayed here in New Orleans due to the storms of 2005. (more…)
