Neighborhood Groups
A "program" describes an issue that this neighborhood addresses by having a committee, task force or events to focus on this area of concern.
The Pontilly Association is a neighborhood organization founded in 1984 to address issues such as housing, crime, flood protection and zoning. After Katrina the role of the organization expanded to develop a rebuilding plan for
Pontcharttrain Park and Gentilly Woods. The Pontilly Association initiated the formation of the Pontilly Disaster Collaborative. The PDC opened the Pontilly
Disaster Recovery Center in July 2007. The PCRC serves the Pontilly community
in several ways: (1) serves as the administrative office of the PDC; (2) functions
as the neighborhood resource center; (3) provides meeting space for groups and organizations essential to the areas recovery; and (4) serves as a hub for volunteers and venue for neighborhood-related presentations.
The Center provides a clearinghouse for information and materials for residents; tools and equipment for volunteers; computers for the community use; and displays of ongoing community projects and neighborhood rebuilding projects.
The Center staff fields calls and queries from interested residents and interested parties; handles volunteer recruitment and supervision; coordinates neighborhood surveys; helps residents negotiate FEMA and Road Home procedures and deal with contractor fraud; and disseminates information on resources.
Ms. Audrey Browder oversees all operations of the Recovery Center. She has been an active community leader for many years and has received recognition recently with the life time Volunteerism Award from President George W. Bush
in 2008; the 2008 Model Citizen award from Neighborhood Partnership Network;
and the 2009 Finer Womanhood Civic Honoree Award from Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Ms. Browder graduated from Xavier and Loyola Universities obtaining a B.A. and M.Ed. and is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Theology from Xavier’s Institute of Black catholic Studies.
